From 2019 to 2021, Janel Schermerhorn served as the Treasurer of Sport-Club John-F.-Kennedy-Schule Berlin e.V. (SC JFKS). In her role, Schermerhorn was tasked with helping to strengthen the organization at a pivotal time.
When Janel Schermerhorn moved to Berlin with her family, she sought more than daily routines and school schedules — she searched for a sense of community in a new country. That is ultimately what she found at Sport-Club John-F.-Kennedy-Schule Berlin e.V. (SC JFKS), the volunteer-driven sports organization affiliated with the John F. Kennedy School.

Founded in 1997, SC JFKS offers a wide range of athletic opportunities for children, teens and adults in Berlin. As a community club — not a competitive or exclusive sports organization — it welcomes members from JFKS as well as students from other schools throughout the city. The club’s multilingual environment, with activities held in both English and German, mirrors the diverse and international character of its families.
With offerings that include soccer, swimming, lacrosse, baseball, gymnastics, cheerleading, Tae Kwon Do and more, SC JFKS gives children opportunities to explore interests, build friendships and develop confidence through sport.
Schermerhorn’s Role as Treasurer (2019–2021)
During her tenure as Treasurer, Janel Schermerhorn managed budgeting, membership fee structures, financial reporting and organizational transparency. Her approach emphasized accessibility and fiscal responsibility — ensuring the club remained true to its mission as a volunteer-run, non-profit community organization.
As an American mom raising children in Berlin, Janel Schermerhorn understood how meaningful it was for families to have a home where cultural backgrounds blended naturally. Her financial stewardship helped maintain the club’s wide range of activities while supporting an environment where local and international children trained and played side by side.
